Online gamers under the age of 18 will only be allowed to play for an hour on Fridays, weekends and holidays, China’s state-run news agency Xinhua reported on Friday, citing the video game regulator.

China’s National Press and Publication Administration told Xinhua that the children would be allowed to play online games between 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

The gaming companies were also instructed to prevent children from playing outside these allowed times.

“Inspections” of online gaming companies will also increase, to check that the time limits are being enforced, the regulator said.

The move came after a state media outlet branded online games “spiritual opium” earlier this month.

Earlier, rules had limited children’s online game-playing to 90 minutes per day, increasing to three hours on holidays.
