Sri Lanka appoints new central bank head

Hundreds of people marched in front of the President’s residence in the capital, Colombo, at midnight on March 31 to protest the government’s failure to address Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic crisis. After an emergency meeting on Sunday, all 28 members of the Cabinet, except for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, submitted their resignations.

After that, the Governor of the country’s central bank also resigned. It is learned that P. Nandalal Weerasinghe has been appointed as the new Governor of Sri Lanka’s central bank.

Confirming his appointment by himself, P. Nandalal Weerasinghe said he is going to take charge from next Thursday. However, his appointment was not officially announced by the central bank.

Sri Lanka’s central bank governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal resigned on Monday amid a severe economic crisis. Earlier, all the ministers of the country announced their resignation.

Noted that Sri Lanka is going through the most difficult situation since gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1948. Rajapaksa’s government has declared a state of emergency across the country. A 36-hour curfew was also imposed. Despite this, all social media was shut down for fear of protests.
