Sri Lanka's central bank governor Ajit Nirvad has resigned following the resignation of 26 members of his cabinet.

Ajit Nirvad said In a tweet on Monday, 'I have resigned from the post of central bank governor as members of the country's cabinet resigned.'

Earlier, 26 members of the Sri Lankan cabinet, who were in deep economic crisis, finally resigned.

Apart from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, 26 members of the cabinet submitted their resignations at a meeting on Sunday night.

The country's education minister Dinesh Gunavardhan informed it to the media. He said the decision was taken after discussions on the economic crisis, adding that all ministers had submitted their resignations so that the president could form a new cabinet.

Among the ministers who resigned amid public outrage over the food, energy and medicine crisis are three members of the ruling Rajapaksa family.

They are Rajapaksa's younger brother, Finance Minister Basil, elder brother, Agriculture Minister Chamal, and their family's son, Sports Minister Namal.
