17 killed in Philippine military plane crash

At least 17 people were killed as a military plane has crashed in the southern region of the Philippines. So far, 40 people have been rescued alive in the incident, AFP reported, citing the country’s defense minister on Sunday.

Philippine Defense Minister Delfin Lorenzana said in a statement that the military C-130 model transport plane with at least 85 passengers on board crashed on the island of Jolo in Sulu province at around 11:30 am local time on Sunday. 40 were rescued after the accident. “The crashed plane was engaged in transporting troops from one place to another,” he said.

Describing the accident as “extremely unfortunate”, the Philippine armed forces chief General Cirilito Sobejana said rescue efforts were underway. “We are praying for more people to be rescued alive,” he told AFP.

It is to be mentioned that a large number of troops have been deployed in the southern part of the Philippines to suppress the militant group Abu Sayyaf has been carrying out terrorist activities, including kidnapping for ransom.

Many of the passengers on the crashed plane have recently completed basic military training. They were being taken to a southern island to fight against the militants.
