World blood donation day is being observed today, Tuesday (June 14) across the country with elaborate programmes like any other place in the world.

The day is being observed in a befitting manner, along with the government, Quantum Foundation has chalked out elaborate programmes marking the day including marching of blood donors, blood camp and blood donor awards ceremony.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud will be present as the chief guest at the award-giving ceremony at the National Press Club auditorium at 11:30 am on Tuesday, said a press release.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has set the theme for this year’s Blood Donation Day -- “Donating Blood is an Act of Solidarity, Join Effort and Save Lives.”

The Quantum Foundation, a humanitarian organization, started blood donation activities in 1998. By establishing its own modern lab in 2000 and complying with all the rules set by the WHO, it became an important source of blood.

So far, Quantum has supplied 14 lakh units of blood and blood elements. In 2020, the foundation has donated about 85,000 units of blood and blood elements maintaining health guidelines.

This year, Mexico is the host country for the global event. They are holding the event through their National Blood Centre on 14 June 2022.
