The High Court has commuted the death sentence of Russell Matubbar, the only accused in the murder case of Sauda Begum, an accounting student of Barishal University, to life imprisonment.

The High Court Justice Krishna Debnath and Justice ASM Abdul Mobin handed down the verdict on Monday.

Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and Advocate Shishir Monir appeared for the accused in the court.

Earlier, the hearing of both parties on the death reference in the High Court and the appeal filed by the accused was over. The High Court then waited for the verdict to be announced.

On 1 June 2015, a Barishal court sentenced Russell Matubbar, a student of the same university, to death in the murder case of Sauda. After hearing the testimony of 19 people in the case on 1 June 2015, Barisal District and Sessions Judge Md. Anwarul Haque gave the verdict. Besides the death penalty, the accused was fined Tk 10,000.

Russell Mia Matubbar, a resident of Patharghata in Barguna, who was sentenced to death, was studying in the 2nd-year of the university’s management department at the time of the murder in September 2013. 
The deceased Sauda, ​​22, daughter of Abdul Razzak of the same upazila, was a 1st-year student in the accounting department of the university.

According to the case statement, Russell hacked Sauda to death on 5 September 2013 at one stage of the argument as she did not agree to have a love affair.

Sauda’s mother Shahida Begum filed a murder case with the Barishal Kotwali Police Station on September 5 night.
