Shopkeeper Babu murder: Gonder to die, 3 get life term

A Dhaka court has sentenced Emdadul Haque alias Gonder to death for killing stationery shopkeeper Kazi Zahurul Islam Babu in the capital's Mirpur area about nine years ago. 

Judge Mohammad Nazrul Islam of the Special Judge's Court-10 of Dhaka pronounced the verdict on Monday.

The court also sentenced three others to life imprisonment. Besides, each of them has been fined Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer six months more in jail. 

Accused who were sentenced to life imprisonment are - Gonder's two brothers Shahidullah and Monir; and their accomplice Azadul. Among them Shahidullah is absconding. The other three accused were in jail. They were produced before court today. After the verdict, they were later sent back to jail with a warrant. 

According to the sources in the case, the accused called stationery shopkeeper Kazi Zahurul Islam Babu from his house in central Monipur area of ​​Mirpur and stabbed him to death at around 11:00 am on July 16, 2013 over the previous hostilities. 

Kazi Tajul Islam, brother of the deceased, filed a case with Mirpur Model Police Station on the same day.

Mirpur Model Police Sub-Inspector Emanur Hossain submitted the chargesheet to the court on July 26, 2014. The court then framed charges against the four accused. During the trial, the court recorded the testimony of 13 of the 15 witnesses in the chargesheet.
