Santahar railway station, the country’s one of the largest railway junctions has been providing vulnerable services having roofless platforms since the British period although reasonable revenue is earned from the station every year. The revenue from this ‘A’ grade station was about Tk 13 crores in the fiscal year of 2018-19.

On the other hand, the 5th platform has hardly existed but confined in papers while the other four are so decrepit that the water trickles through the canopies in a little raining. The foot over-bridge is also in a worsened state although the bridge was renovated by a contractor organization only six months ago.

According to railway source, Tk 12 crores 97 lakhs 93 thousand 757 was earned from the inter-city train only within June 2018 and May 2019, except the local and mail trains under private management. But the station gets no upgradation so far.

It has been found that the junction station of Santahar was built by the lime and surki during the British period, is considered as first-class but did not get the touch of development still now.

The passengers traveling from Santahar-Lalmonirhat and Santahar-Bonarpara lines travel to various stations including district city Bogura using platform number 5. Hundreds of passengers including employees, lawyers, students, businessmen, travel from Santahar station to Bogura district headquarters. From the beginning, the platform has no roof, so the passengers have to go under sun’s heat and rain to get the train. As a result, when the rain starts, the passengers have to stay on platform number 4. Many passengers are being injured due to hurry to get the train at its arrival time.

According to multiple passengers, a huge number of different classes of train passengers travel to Bogura through Padmarag train at dawn to reach Bogura in time. The passengers have to face troubles due to the 5 no. useless platform.

It is learned that there is no evidence of the 5th platform.  On the other hand, the lighting on the platform is also insufficient. That is why girls and travelers outside of Santahar have to travel by train at night with fear. Stealing and robbing are taking place at night.

Railway sources say that there are 39 trains operating daily through this junction station.

A railway employee on the condition of anonymity, said, “The railway is a service-oriented organization. The main task of the railway is to ensure 100 percent service to the passengers. But due to the negligence of the railway authorities and some corrupted officials, it is ashamed to say now.”

The investigation reveals that there are a first-class, a second class and a shovon class restroom for the passengers. Although six caretakers are supposed to be available for three restrooms, while the real scenario is that, the restrooms are being operated with only one caretaker due to the manpower crisis.

Santahar’s Grade-1 Station Master Rezaul Karim Dalim said, “It is a traditional first-class junction station. It is absolutely necessary to give a superintendent at this station. In addition, a written request has been made to General Manager Khairul Alam and Chief Engineer of West Rajshahi Zonal, Ramjan Ali for extending tin-shed on the entire platform, including elevating the ground level of 5th platform.”

The authorities have assured that they will take necessary steps after inspection, Rezaul Karim Dalim added.
