Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi’s murder case is one of the most discussed issues this year. On April 6, 18-year-old Nusrat Jahan, an alim examinee of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa, was set on fire in broad daylight on the roof of the madrasa by people loyal to principal Sirajuddaula, when she refused to withdraw a sexual harassment case her family filed against him on May 27.

She succumbed to her critical burn injuries at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 10, which sparked nationwide outrage and public demand for swift justice against the perpetrators.

After filing a murder case in the incident, Police Crime Investigation Department (PBI) filed a chargesheet against 16 accused. A Feni tribunal has sentenced 16 people to death in the sensational Nusrat murder case. Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Mamunur Rashid passed the verdict at 11:21 am on Thursday.

Shahjahan Saju, a lawyer for the Bangladesh Supreme Court and Feni Judge Court, has taken the responsibility of the case on behalf of Nusrat’s family. Regarding being involved with the case, he said that Nusrat’s mother filed a sexual harassment case Sirajuddaula on March 28. I was the lawyer of that case. I have been involved with the Nusrat murder case since April 10.

Advocate Shahjahan Saju said, “I have fought this case for my self-motivation, even spent a lot of money out of my own pocket. Nusrat’s family did not have to spend single money. They didn’t even buy a paper.”

He added: “I have three daughters myself; they also study in different institutions. No other girl should be victimized by such ruthlessness at the educational institute. That is why I fought in the legal battle to ensure maximum exemplary punishment for the accused from social responsibility. There is no question of taking remuneration.”

The death awardees are - former principal of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa Md Sirajuddaula, Nur Uddin, Shahdat Hossain Shamim, Sonagazi municipality councillor Maksud Alam, Saifur Rahman Mohammad Jobayer, Jabed Hossain alias Sakhwat Hossain Jabed, Hafez Abdul Kader, Afsar Uddin, Kamrun Nahar Moni, Umme Sultana alias Popy alias Tuhin alias Shampa alias Champa, Abdur Rahim Sharif, Eftekhar Uddin Rana, Imran Hossain alias Mamun, Mohammad Shamim, Vice-President of the Governing Body of Madrasah Ruhul Amin and Mohiuddin Shakil. The Tribunal also fined them Tk 1 lakh each. The plaintiff’s lawyer, Advocate Shahjahan Saju, expressed satisfaction with the verdict.

Shahjahan Saju said, “I am so happy with the verdict that I can’t express. I have to face many uncomfortable situations in handling this case. Defendant’s lawyers have cited various times inside and outside the court. Some lawyers have also behaved inauspiciously. Looking at my daughters’ face I fought for Nusrat, I didn’t care anything.”
