India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi held his first Union cabinet meeting of his second term on Friday. The first file signed by PM Modi on assuming charge in his second term as PM was to enhance the amount of scholarships under the National Defence Fund and to include State Police Personnel in its ambit.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi distributed the portfolio among the council of ministers of his new cabinet in which he (Modi) has picked his closet aide Amit Shah as the Home Minister.

Rajnath Singh moved to Defence Ministry, Nirmala Sitharaman appointed as the Finance Minister and Career diplomat S Jaishankar is the Foreign Minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet, according to a Rashtrapati Bhawan communiqué.

“The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has directed the allocation of portfolios among the following members of the Union Council of Ministers,” the communiqué, said.

The portfolios were distributed among the ministers of Modi’s new government, a day after swearing-in Modi as Prime Minister for the second term in the Rashtrapati Bhavan in which a total of 8,000 guests including the leaders of BIMSTEC countries attended.

As many as 37 ministers from the previous term including Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, Uma Bharti, Jayant Sinha and Rajyavardhan Rathore were dropped from the new cabinet.

Modi’s new council of ministers consists of 24 with cabinet rank, nine junior ministers with independent charge and 24 junior ministers.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who returned to power with a massive mandate in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls has called the first meeting of the new Union Cabinet in Delhi today.
