8yrs of Mirsarai tragedy today

The 8th anniversary of the Mirsharai tragedy is on Thursday. One of the worst road accidents in the country, which saw the deaths of scores of schoolchildren.
Prayers have been arranged in memory of the dead and praying for their departed souls. Memorial meetings have been organized in their schools.
On July 11, 2011, a total of 45 people including 42 students of Abu Torab High School, Abu Torab Primary School, and Abu Torab Fazil Madrasha, were killed when a pick-up truck carrying them veered off the road and plunged into a roadside ditch at Mirsharai.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina rushed to spot to condolence the mournful families. Khaleda Zia, former President Badruddoza Chowdhury, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, and foreign delegation members also visited the spot.
Later, a memorial ‘Antim’ was built in memory of those killed in the accident spot. The memorial ‘Abeg’ was located at the main gate of the school.
The various political and social organizations in the area, including all the students, teachers, and guardians of the school paid tribute to these two memorials.
“Special prayers on different religions at 8:00 am, wearing a black-badge at 9:00 am, a mourning rally at 10:00 am was held like every year. After placing wreaths at ‘Abeg’ to ‘Antim’ at 10:30 am, reminiscence and discussion meeting were held at 11:00 am,” said Morzina Akhter, principal of Abu Torab High School, regarding the programs.
The students of Abu Torab High School, Abu Torab Government Primary School, Abu Torab Madrasa and Prof Kamal Uddin Chowdhury College were killed in the incident.
Such tragedy may never be repeated anywhere in the world, said the people of Mirsharai.
What happened that day
On July 11, 2011, at the Mirsharai Stadium, after winning the Bangabandhu Gold Cup Football final, all the people were returning to home by mini truck. The truck crumbled in the dock in the Saadi area of Barotakia-Abutarab road and drowned. In this incident, 45 died. On the other hand, Haranath died due to a heart attack hearing the death news of his son.
34 students of Abu Torab Multipurpose High School died in the accident. Besides, three teachers of Abu Torab Government Primary School, two of Prof Kamal Uddin Chowdhury College, two of Abu Torab Fazil Madrasa, and two students of Abu Torab SM Government Primary School died.
The deceased were identified as Saidul Islam, Sakhawat Hossain, Takib Ullah Mahmud Shakib, Ananda Chandra Das, Noor Mohammad Rahat, Al Mobarak Jewel, Tofazzal Islam, Liton Chandra Das, Mohammad Samshuddin, Mejbah Uddin, Imran Hossain Imon, Kajal Chandra Nath, Surya Chandra Nath, Dhruv Nath, Abu Sufyan Sujon, Rupon Chandra Nath, Samshuddin, Iftekhar Uddin Mahmud, Amin Sharif, Ujjal Chandra Nath, Sharif Uddin, Sakhawat Hossain, Kamrul Islam, Tarek Hossain, Nayan Shil, Saju Kumar Das, Jewel Barua, Raihan Uddin, Jahidul Islam, SM Riaz Uddin, Titu Das, Rajib Hossain, Ashraf Uddin, Zillur Rahman, Zahidul Islam, Saiful Islam, Ashraf Uddin Panir, Raihan Uddin Shuvo, Manzoor Morshed, Tarek Hossain, Sakhawat Hossain Nayan, Anwar Hossain, Haranath Das, Ariful Islam, Rakibul Islam Chowdhury.
