Two people died and 17 injured from a fire that broke out from chemical storage on the ground floor of a residential building in Old Dhaka’s Armanitola, near the Babubazar Bridge in the capital.

The fire broke out in a six-storey building called Hazi Musa Mansion at 3:15 am on Thursday. After attempting for about three hours, 19 units of the fire service brought the fire under control.

“The fire was under control. A body of a security guard of the building has been recovered in the incident,” said Brigadier General Md. Sajjad Hossain, director general of the Fire Service and Civil Defense.

Besides, 17 people including three members of the fire service were injured. One of them was rescued in a burnt condition. They were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and Mitford Hospital. Another woman died while undergoing treatment, he added.

An eyewitness said that the fire started from the chemical storage due to an electrical short circuit.

It is learned that the six-storey building has chemical storage and a few shops on the ground floor. There are tenants from the second-floor to the fifth-floor of the building. At first, some people got stuck on the roof of the building. Later, the fire service personnel broke their window and veranda grills and brought them out.

Earlier, on 3 June 2010, at least 124 people were killed in fire from an illegally operated chemical warehouse in Nimtali, Old Dhaka. Besides, on the night of February 20, 2019, 67 people died in a terrible fire at the Churihatta area in Chawkbazar of Old Dhaka.
